- At the time, Southey was Acting Colonial Secretary at the Cape. Speke and Grant arrived in Cape Town in July, 1860, en route to East Africa. The Governor, Sir George Grey, supplied the expedition with baggage mules and ten (volunteer) Hottentots from the Cape Mounted Rifles.
