- Scope and Contents note
- Letters written in response to Guedalla's invitation to attend a dinner given for Lord Randolph Churchill on the eve of his departure for South Africa at the Amphitryon Club on 18 March 1891. Among the replies are those from J. Chamberlain and Asquith. Some of the letters are formal acceptances of the invitation; others more personal in content. Lord Randolph's trip to South Africa resulted in his book Men, mines and animals in South Africa. While there he wrote to Winston, at that time at Harrow, "Here I have been examining gold mines & investing money in what I hope will be fortunate undertakings ..."
