- In the diaries, Brooks comments on some of the major events of the time. As examples, diary entries for 1917-18, the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s mention World War I combat, Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight to Paris, the Great Depression, the progress of World War II, the Apollo lunar missions, the Watergate scandal and the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion respectively. Entries also discuss very personal as well as mundane matters between Brooks, Ruth, their son Peter and other family members.
