- This series consists of materials related to Kaplan's fieldwork in Benin, Nigeria. This includes her tenure as a Fulbright professor at the University of Benin from 1983-1985 and subsequent books, articles, symposia, correspondence, and travels to Benin. Materials are dated from 1969-2012 and include correspondence, field notes, sound recordings, research files, press, ephemera, travel files, photographs, and writings. Correspondence includes letters from friends and business associates in Benin, including extensive correspondence with the Oba of Benin. The field notes and sound recordings span more than 20 years and include interviews, research, and Kaplan's thoughts on her experiences. The administration and research materials include travel files, ephemera, and a number of logistical files pertaining to Kaplan's Fulbright award. The symposia and exhibitions subseries includes material for the events Kaplan organized or was involved in related to Benin. Some of these events took place in Benin, while others were organized and took place at New York University. The book files consist of materials primarily related to the publication of Benin Art and Culture.
