- Scope and Contents
- This series comprises materials related to Kaplan's museum studies work and education from 1951-2012 (bulk 1970-2012). This primarily covers her career at New York University (NYU) as a professor of anthropology, and director and founder of the museum studies program, but also includes materials from her time as an assistant and curator at the Brooklyn Museum and as a lecturer at the City University of New York (CUNY). Materials include correspondence, memos, newsletters, photographs, research files, notes, date books, address books, lectures, and writings. The administration and correspondence subseries contain materials related to interdepartmental business and committees, public relations, course materials, consulting, travel and logistics, grants, proposals, and research. The conferences and lectures subseries primarily deal with events external to NYU that Kaplan participated in including ICOM (International Council of Museums), AAA (American Anthropological Association), and ACASA (Arts Council of the African Studies Association). Publishing and writings consists of materials dealing with Kaplan's museum studies publications including correspondence, contracts, and marketing materials for Museums and the Making of "Ourselves": The Role of Objects in National Identity.
