Scope and Contents
Ndebele Children Near Homestead, 1936-1949. Photographic image taken from the side of three children are sitting in front of a homestead decorated with painted geometric designs around the borders of the door, window, and edges of the walls. Each child is holding his two hands together in a prayer like manner. They are all wearing beaded rings around their necks, wrists, and legs. Photograph by Constance Stuart Larrabee, 1936-1949.
There are nine 8x10 black and white fiber-based prints of this negative in the Constance Stuart Larrabee Collection. There are three black and white vintage prints: one 8x10 in., one 23 x 19 1/2 cm., and one 21 1/2 x 17 cm. There is a caption on the back of the 8x10 vintage print that reads as follows: "Young Ndebele sunning themselves outside their hut, not far from the golden city of Johannesburg." The 21 1/2 x 17 cm. vintage print has a caption that reads: "Spring comes to the young Ndebele picanins. They welcome the Spring blossoms as they clap their hands and sing." EEPA also produced an 8x10 study print for reference purposes.
