- Scope and Contents
- "Despite exploration that began during the colonial era, there was no petroleum production until 1975, when significant deposits discovered offshore in 1970 and 1972 began to be exploited. A refinery was built with Italian participation in 1968 to process imported oil. The plant has a refining capacity of 17,000 barrels per day." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
