- Scope and Contents note
- Edward Brazerol, a white man born in 1893, discusses his experiences as a life-long resident of Anacostia, including the neighborhood's geographic boundaries around St. Elizabeth's Hospital, recreational centers and parks nearby, and typical family structure. He talks about his experiences with the neighborhood's public education system and how many of his peers did not finish high school but instead attended trade schools. He provides information about typical incomes, the different businesses, and segregation in Anacostia. Brazerol recalls the Anacostia Bank (now the Anacostia National Bank), Alpert's Real Estate Business, and Dr. Hagner, a community leader who worked for the government. He concludes the interview by talking about the change in the police presence in the neighborhood. Edward Brazerol was interviewed on November 21, 1970 by an unnamed volunteer or staff member at Anacostia Neighborhood Museum (now the Anacostia Community Museum). Digital audio files include white noise and static; interviewee can be heard clearly for most parts.
