- Caption: The Kitchen Garden of Mount Vernon. Seat of Gen. Geo. Washington in Virginia The Design of an Elegant Kitchen and Fruit Garden Containing 0.92 Acres This Garden was enlarged to the present size by Gen. George Washington in the spring of 1786. It was restored in 1936, under Mrs. Alice K. Richards, Regent, agreeable to the manager to Laying out and Planting gardens as set forth on plans formerly in the General's possession. The several kinds of Fruit Tree, Roots, Pulse, and Herbs now grown are to be found named in the garden records of the General, or in lists which he is known to have used. - Though Ellen Shipman had no direct role with Mount Vernon, it was a major influence on her work. Slides such as this were likely used in her lectures as an example for Colonial Revival style gardens.
