Paducah -- Gamble Garden
Object Details
- General
- The 1929 classical revival house and surrounding property were in bad condition when the owners purchased in 2007, needing two years of reconstruction from a fire, renovation, and new construction. Their 1.5-acre purchase was divided with one parcel across the street from the house, partly used as a nursery for damaged plants including bluebells, trillium, choice daffodils, lily-of-the-valley, and sedum dug up from the gardens of the former owners. During the two years rebuild the owners removed a 30-foot fishpond but later repurposed the rocks as edging, steppingstones, and stone benches. Other building blocks and ornaments were salvaged from their city. An Asian fir tree collected by former owners is the focal point alongside the patio they had built, and two oakleaf hydrangeas from the original garden are focal points on either side of the house. A new circular driveway has sections of brick that match the house and is shaded by mature trees planted with a new understory of dogwood, birch, and holly. The patio is enclosed by ironwork fencing with brick columns, and two ironwork gates designed to match a grill on the upper story balcony. The patio has pots of red geraniums, summering house plants, in ground hydrangeas, and wrought iron furniture. A flower garden edged with rocks has daisies, rudbeckia, ferns, and wildflowers, donated by friends or from the original gardens. An extended garage has workshops for the creative owners and is fronted by a portico draped with wisteria. The back lot is grassy with mature trees and a berm at the far end planted with relocated trillium, daffodils, and bluebells. A knot garden was planted where it could be viewed from inside the house, at the breakfast nook. In a work and storage area there are two cold frames for the buckeyes the owner propagates. The owners have revitalized a derelict garden, Cardinal Hill, that was well-known in the community to their own taste, saving and repurposing plants and hardscape materials. There are additional photographs in the digital file folder with before and after views. Persons associated with the garden's design: Oscar Gamble and Jane Gamble (owners and garden designers, 2007- ).
