- Ann Elizabeth Dunwoody (born 1953, Fort Belvoir, Virginia) “didn’t initially understand all the fuss” when President George W. Bush nominated her as the commanding general of Army Materiel Command in 2008. Recognized as one of the military’s “premier logisticians,” she would be entrusted with managing the army’s global supply chain, with its $60 billion budget and over 69,000 people serving in over seventy countries. Upon confirmation, Dunwoody became the first female four-star general in the U.S. military.
- Having grown up in a military family with a long history of service, General Dunwoody earned her commission as a quartermaster officer in 1975. She went on to serve at every level of command, earning numerous awards. After her retirement in 2012, Dunwoody began sharing the leadership acumen she developed over thirty-eight years of service with a broader public; her autobiography, A Higher Standard: Leadership Strategies from America’s First Female Four-Star General, was published in 2015.
