- African cultures have been a "decisive agent for creation" in Latin America. Some of the most important artists in Latin America have been profoundly influenced by the power of African cultures transported to the New World. This cultural mixture (mestizaje) has developed differently in different parts of Latin America, more African in some, more creolized in others. Religious cults have been a powerful vehicle through which African cultural practices and ritual arts have survived and even flourished. Religious arts, including costume, regalia, altar pieces, statuary, graphic signs, all preserve their strong African character.
- African cultural components are persistent and highly visible in modern Latin American art--not just as design elements, but at a more profound conceptual level. Mosquera discusses the presence of African consciousness as it is manifested in the art of several Cuban, Haitian, Venezuelan and other Latin American artists.
