- Summary
- A young Lincoln sits on a stump, his proper left hand resting on the head of a hound sitting beside him. In his proper right hand, Lincoln holds a book against his thigh, marking a place with his index finger. An axe leans against the stump on his proper right. Lincoln wears a shirt with sleeves rolled up to the elbows, breeches and mid-calf length boots. The sculpture is mounted on a tiered rectangular base. On each side of the base's top tier are four bronze medallions representing the qualities of patriotism, justice, fortitude and charity. Patriotism is represented by an eagle with sheaves of wheat in its talons. Justice is a blindfolded woman holding scales in one hand and a sword in the other. Charity is depicted as a mother with a baby on her lap and a boy and girl on either side. Fortitude is seen as a man on a lion with a discus in one hand and a scroll in the other. All figures wear classical robes.
