Object Details
- Description
- On April 11, 1960, three stamps were issued under Ordinance XVI of the same day to commemorate the first anniversary of the transfer of the relics of Pope St. Pius X from Rome to Venice and their return.
- The designs were created by Casimira Dabrowska and engraved by Mario Columbati (15-lire), Mazzini Canfarini (35-lire), and Vittorio Nicastro (60-lire). The values of 15-lire and 60-lire were recessed and printed on paper with the number 1 Crossed Keys watermark in panes of forty-five (9 x 5) and linear perforated 131/4. The 35-lire was recess printed on paper with number 2 Crossed Keys watermark by rotary press in panes of thirty and comb perforated 13 1/4 by 14. There were 1,100,000 complete sets printed, and they remained valid until March 31, 1961.
- The 35-lire value bears the inscription "Pope John XXIII Venerates the Remains of St. Pius X About to Depart for Venice, April 11, 1959." The body of St. Pius X left Vatican City on that date and arrived by rail at Venice on the next day, April 12.
- The coffin appears on the stamp. The stamp's vignette depicts the interior of the railway coach that took the body of Pope St. Pius X to Venice. John XXIII kneels beside the coffin in prayer, just before the train departed from the Vatican City railway station for Venice.
