- Description
- This South African banknote features a portrait of Nelson Mandela. Mandela spent his life fighting for freedom and justice in South Africa. He was imprisoned for 27 years for resisting the South African government’s apartheid policies that enforced segregation and oppressed Africans and other people of color. In 1993, he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end the apartheid system. The following year, he became South Africa’s first African president and served until 1999. Mandela first appeared on South African banknotes during his lifetime in 2012.
