1925 - 1935 Amelia Papelka Wolff's "Sunbonnet Sue" Quilt
Object Details
- Wolff, Amelia Josephine Papelka
- Description
- This appliqued “Sunbonnet Sue’" pattern crib quilt was made by Amelia Josephine (nee Papelka) Wolff for her grandniece, Jean Lee Eareckson, about 1930. Amelia, born 1867, immigrated as a baby to Iowa with her parents and siblings from Crudim, E. Bohemia. She married Andrew Wolff, a brick merchant and they lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Amelia died in 1937.
- The “Sunbonnet Sue” pattern was a popular pattern in the early 20th century; this one is hand stitched, hand quilted, appliqued and embroidered. The sunbonnet babies are grouped in two rows in sets of 4; the hands and feet are outlined in black. A floral design was used for the quilting pattern on the pink border; grid quilting for the center.
