- Description
- The 1793 chain cent is one of the first circulating coins produced at the United States mint in Philadelphia. Objections to the coin were immediately raised by the public, with complaints that the chain design suggested slavery, and Liberty appeared wild and uncivilized. As a result, both were short-lived.
