Smithsonian’s National Zoo To Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day

In honor of International Migratory Bird Day, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is hosting a free and family-friendly day of activities celebrating the 350 species of birds that migrate between their nesting habitats in North America and wintering grounds in Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean Islands. Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Zoo will be filled with educational games, activities and demonstrations.

Guests will make their own “seed bombs” filled with seeds of plants that provide habitat for migratory birds. Experts will host bilingual bird walks and provide tips on the best birding sites in the Washington, D.C., area. Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center scientists will demonstrate how they band birds for research in the wild. Refreshments will include bird-friendly coffee grown in shade, providing critical habitat for migratory species.
