Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol to Play at Two Smithsonian IMAX Theaters
Smithsonian Theaters presents Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol at the National Museum of Natural History’s Johnson IMAX Theater Jan. 6. The film will also continue to play at the National Air and Space Museum’s Airbus IMAX Theater at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.
The 132-minute, PG-13 rated film is the fourth installment of the Mission: Impossible series. After a terrorist bombing of the Kremlin during a covert mission, Impossible Mission Force operative Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team are renounced. The President invokes “Ghost Protocol,” tasking Hunt and his new team with clearing the agency’s name and preventing another terrorist attack without resources, backup or official recognition.
Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol features approximately 25 minutes of action sequences that were filmed with IMAX cameras. These scenes fill the theaters’ six-story screens, enabling audiences to feel like they are actually scaling the world’s tallest building without a safety rope or racing through a sandstorm. This is an immersive experience that cannot be achieved in a standard-sized movie theater.
Directed by Brad Bird and produced by J.J. Abrams, the film features Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Josh Holloway, Anil Kapoor and Léa Seydoux.
Audiences at both theaters will also get to preview the six-minute opening scene from next summer’s release, The Dark Knight Rises, the epic conclusion to the Batman trilogy. The Airbus and Johnson IMAX theaters are the only theaters in the region that have this special preview footage, which was also filmed with IMAX cameras.
Tickets are now available. Individual tickets may be reserved and purchased up to two weeks in advance. Groups of 10 or more may reserve tickets now for any date during the film’s run.
