Caribou tracks in the snow near Arctic Village, part of the Gwich’in Nation, an Athabaskan territory that stretches across interior Alaska and northwest Canada. According to recent estimates, 75 percent of the village’s diet is wild. The Gwich’in who still hunt and live close to the land, call themselves “People of the Caribou.”
