The Bezos Earth Fund made a $12 million dollar grant to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, where the ForestGEO network has been tracking individual trees for the past 40 years to understand tropical forest dynamics. This network grew from sites in the forest on Panama’s Barro Colorado Island Research Station, celebrating 100 years of tropical science this year, into the ForestGEO network, an international partnership that currently tracks 7 million trees representing 12,000 species at 76 sites in 29 countries. Several of the GEO-TREES sites supported by this grant will be ForestGEO sites.
