This exhibition marks the first time a major survey of the art of Mexico solely from its public collections has been presented in the U.S.

Included among approximately 100 works are objects from the pre-Columbian period through the 19th century, a span of 12,000 years.

Examples include:

  • the first known work of art created on the American continent (10,000 BC), a carved animal backbone.
  • a 5-ton Olmec stone head (1000-800 BC), as well as the famous olmec sculpture, The Wrestler.
  • Mixtec gold works (1300-1521 AD) from Tomb 7 at Monte Alban (bracelets, necklaces, pectorals, earplugs, rings, etc.)
  • a fragment of a colorful Teotihuican wall mural.
  • 17th and 18th century paintings and works in wood, silver and bronze.
