A selection of Japanese art is presented as a memorial to Dr. Harold P. Stern, who served as director for the Freer from 1971 until his death on April 3, 1977.

Included in the 20 porcelains, paintings and sculptures are some of his favorite Japanese objects, all of which were acquired during his tenure as director.
