As part of the Directions series, multimedia sound artist Janet Cardiff (b. 1957, Canada) has designed a site-specific, outdoor audio walking tour around the Hirshhorn and National Mall titled Words drawn in water. Visitors can borrow specially adapted headsets to experience this multisensory sound sculpture that uses binaural technology—a means of recording that achieves incredibly 3-D sounds. Janet Cardiff is best known for her signature audio walks that she made in London, Florence, San Francisco, New York, and elsewhere.
