Always There: The African American Presence in American Quilts

African American quilting is “always there,” a constant presence in American history, dating to the late eighteenth century and continuing into the present. However, the lives, materials, and styles of quiltmakers vary greatly throughout the history of African American quiltmaking. The exhibition’s rich mixture of quilts showcases tremendous diversity and creativity among the common thread of African American quiltmaking.
