- Summary
- Wilbur Armstrong Nelson (1890-1969) was a professor of geology at the University of Virginia and that state's official geologist. This photograph was distributed in connection with a University of Virginia/National Geographic Society scientific expedition that was to embark on a year-long cruise throughout the south and central Pacific Ocean island. When war broke out in Europe in September 1939, the expedition was cancelled.
