- Description
- The Postal Service issued a 37-cent Purple Heart definitive stamp in a pressure-sensitive adhesive pane of twenty on May 30, 2003, in Mount Vernon, Virginia. The stamp was designed by Carl T. Herrman, Carlsbad, California, and photographed by Ira Wexler, Bethesda, Maryland.
- This stamp honors the sacrifices of the men and women who serve in the US military. The president of the United States awards the Purple Heart badge to members of the US military who have been wounded or killed in action. According to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, an organization for combat-wounded veterans, the medal is "the oldest military decoration in the world in present use and the first award made available to a common soldier."
- The stamp was printed in offset process, Microprint "USPS" by the Banknote Corporation of America, Inc., in Browns Summit, North Carolina. 125 stamps were printed.
