- Description
- The Postal Service honored Rhode Island with a commemorative stamp issued on May 29, 1990, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, at the Slater Mill historic site.
- Slater Mill, built by English immigrant Samuel Slater, was the first factory in America to successfully produce cotton yarn with water-powered machines, marking the beginning of the factory system in Rhode Island.
- Designed by Robert Brangwynne, the stamps were engraved in the offset/intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and issued in panes of fifty.
