New Science for Cleaner Air

A new tool will help monitor air quality

At 12:30 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2023, a SpaceX Falcon 9 shot into space, carrying an instrument that will transform the way we understand and monitor air pollution across North America—Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution, or TEMPO.

TEMPO—a partnership among the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, NASA, Ball Aerospace, Maxar Technologies and Intelsat—will collect, analyze and share data about emissions so that scientists and the public can make informed decisions about air quality in their communities.
