This caricature appeared on the cover of Time magazine in April 1973—a critical moment during the Watergate scandal. Beginning with James McCord (1924–2017), the former CIA officer and electronics expert who burglarized and bugged the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Complex, the individuals pictured here began to implicate others of misdeeds. Tangled up in recording tape, phone cords, and other listening equipment, they surround President Richard Nixon and point fingers at one other.
Clockwise from upper left are McCord; Jeb Magruder (1934–2014), the acting director of the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CRP); H. R. “Bob” Haldeman (1926–1993), White House chief of staff; John Wesley Dean III (born 1938), White House counsel; John N. Mitchell (1913–1988), attorney general; and Maurice Stans (1908–1988), CRP finance chair. Ultimately, all of them were convicted of wrongdoing in the Watergate scandal. The revelation of how much President Nixon knew of their actions is what ultimately forced his resignation.
