- Story Circle: Beyond ADA 30 – Impacts, Intersections & Reflecting Forward
- Description
- Watch version with ASL: https://youtu.be/qK_n4I-Gs5E This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a landmark civil rights legislation prohibiting the discrimination of individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. As our nation takes time to celebrate, reflect, and dream forward, we do so against the backdrop of our current landscape: continuing to feel the impacts of both COVID-19 and systemic racism that have underscored the infrastructures that create and maintain inequality for many communities. How do the impacts of our dual pandemics intersect with the disability community, and influence the way we look to the future? As we begin to design a new world that will re-imagine everything from architecture, infrastructure, and transportation, to education, employment, and cultural arts experiences, how do we do so in a way that ensures that everyone has equal access and is meaningfully included? This Story Circle features a conversation with disability advocates Anil Lewis (director, Jernigan Institute, National Federation of the Blind), Beth Ziebarth (director, Access Smithsonian), and LeDerick Horne (poet, and activist), reflecting on the current landscape of the disability community and the road ahead in our post-pandemic world.
