Drawn from life in 1837 following Osceola's capture or copied by the artist between 1837 and 1845 and based on his 1837 portrait; attested to and possibly owned by Brigadier General Joseph M. Hernandez (1792-1857, U.S. Army, whose signature appears at the bottom); acquired by Colonel Brantz Mayer (1809-1879, a Baltimore, Maryland, lawyer and author) at an unknown date; transferred to his great-nephew Charles Mayer Van Kleeck (1870-1951) at an unknown date; inherited by Charles Van Kleeck's sister Mary Van Kleeck (1883-1972); donated to MAI by Miss Van Kleeck in 1951.
