- Senator Barry Goldwater from Arizona was the 1964 Republican nominee for president. This lemon-lime soda was sold as a campaign fundraiser and distributed at the Republican National Convention with the slogan “the can that packs political punch.” The campaign for President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Democratic nominee, responded with a competing beverage. Goldwater lost to Johnson by one of the largest margins in any presidential election.
