- WOODEN MASK, WEARING TURBAN, REDDISH BROWN PORTRAIT OF A MAN WITH BLUE, WHITE PINK PAINT AND BLACK INK. PROVENIENCE UNDOCUMENTED. IDENTIFICATION PROVIDED BY HMSG. PURSHASED BY J HIRSHHORN FROM THE DELACORTE GALLERY, NEW YORK, IN 1959.
- Ca. 2nd century.
- Coffin mask, wood, painted. Paint on face is unusual dark brown - the usual would have been a dark brownish red. Perhaps the appearance has changed due to weathering or unstable pigment or application of some kind of preservative? Face is done in a somewhat archaic style, with cheek bars indicating a false bear. Either represents a consciously archaicizing trend, or could be a little earlier that the Ptolemaic period.
