Coat worn by Rosalind Russell in Auntie Mame
Object Details
- Description (Brief)
- Hollywood designer Orry-Kelly created this floor length coat for actress Rosalind Russell to wear as the heroine of the 1958 Warner Bros. film, Auntie Mame. Designed for Russell’s first scene in the movie, the costume is appropriately scene-stealing in its effect. It is made of a bright orange crepe fabric and decorated with orange sequins and black beads arranged in intricate patterns along the front placket of the coat, underscoring the stylish ostentation of the madcap title character. Russell premiered the role on Broadway before committing it to film, winning an Oscar nomination for the latter.
