- Former Minnesota senator and vice president Walter Mondale was in private law practice when he became the 1984 Democratic presidential nominee. He chose as his running mate Representative Geraldine Ferraro from New York, the first woman to be on the national ticket of a major party. They lost overwhelmingly to Republican incumbents President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H.W. Bush.
