- Vice President Al Gore was the 2000 Democratic nominee. He chose Joe Lieberman, senator from Connecticut, as his running mate. They narrowly lost to their Republican opponents George W. Bush, governor of Texas, and Dick Cheney, former representative from Wyoming and Secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush, his running mate’s father.
