- Governor Thomas Dewey of New York was the Republican candidate for president in 1948, his second failed attempt to win the White House. He lost to the Democratic candidate President Harry S. Truman who successfully retained the office he had assumed after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945.
