- Description
- This Polio Issue stamp honors those who helped fight polio and commemorates the 20th anniversary of the founding of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, now known as the March of Dimes. The organization was founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to combat polio. Poliomyelitis is a viral disease that causes paralysis of the muscles. Young children are the most susceptible to the disease. The stamp features an image of a woman holding a shield with the caduceus symbol, standing with a boy and girl. It celebrates those in the medical profession who helped find an effective vaccine to prevent paralytic polio.
