We depend on language every day but rarely consider how we communicate our needs and interest in daily situations. Today, Deborah Schiffrin (chair, linguistics department, Georgetown University) and Anna Trester (assistant director, language and communication program, Georgetown University) discuss the different forms of communication and then delve into how to improve verbal communication by understanding how the right word and the wrong word can affect interaction with one another.

The Smithsonian Latino Center presents two films from Puerto Rico that reflect the political, social, and economic changes taking place on the island.
1-2 PM: La Isla Chatarra (2007, in Spanish with English subtitles, directed by Karen Rossi) An award-winning documentary highlighting Puerto Rican car culture. 3-5 PM: Angela (2007, in Spanish with English subtitles, directed by and starring Jacobo Morales) A political thriller about dirty cops and a framed leftist university professor.

Then return to the classroom to create your own miniature diorama that combines elements from these unique paintings and your vivid imagination. Museum astronomer Sean O'Brien and local amateur astronomers bring out their high-power telescopes and share their knowledge of the night sky. Get away from the glare of city lights and see stars you never knew existed. Witness the thousands of stars that litter the dark night sky, and with the help of high-power optics, view nearby planets and stars up close. Note: Please bring a red filter or brown paper bag to cover your flashlight. In case of clouds or rain, an amateur astronomer will lead a short alternate program.
