Performance Native Theater: Mestiza Power
Performance
(in Spanish with English subtitles) This new theatrical work illustrates the dignity and everyday lives of contemporary Mayan women. The play is based on a series of interviews conducted with city and rural street vendors and recounts their childhood memories, educational experiences, cultural life, and the issues that face them today, including stories of domestic violence, street selling, and mystical practice. Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month.

(2008, 60 min., in Hindi and English with English subtitles, directed by Irfana Majumdar and Arshad Mirza) During the festival of Ramlila, the streets of Varanasi, India, are transformed into dramatic theatrical stages. Hindu deities manifest themselves in local children, who then act out the great epic of Rama. This film is about the lives of Ramlila child-actors in Banaras and the audiences who enjoy their "play" (lila) and seek their blessings. To introduce and discuss the film are directors Irfana Majumdar and Arshad Mirza.
