In the last 50 years, stunning archaeological finds have augmented our knowledge of China's ancient cultures. This seminar brings together eminent scholars and archaeologists who work in different regions of this vast country and whose discoveries give us a broad picture of Chinese beginnings from the Paleolithic period through the Bronze Age. This evening, Robert Thorp (professor emeritus of Chinese art and archaeology, Washington University) discusses the origins of Chinese civilization and the Bronze Age.

(1961, 103 min., bandw, Japanese with English subtitles, directed by Keisuke Kinoshita) The year is 1932, and a woman, whose fiance is fighting in China, is raped and then forced into marriage with a landowner's son (Nakadai). In four more chapters presented over three decades, their children undertake their own searches for love.

Be among the first to see Part II of the exhibition The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality, and the Moving Image on the opening weekend of Realisms. The evening includes a special live performance by Maxi Geil and Playcolt, a music project conceived by artist Guy Richards Smit. Composed of art school pals and a revolving cast of friends, the group's music captures and breathes out Smit's modern day vision of the 1980s East Village Art Scene. Note: Tickets are limited and may be purchased 1 month in advance for $10 or at the door for $12; free to Hirshhorn Annual Circle members.
