Lecture Beijing: Ancient City, Modern Outlook
All-Day Seminar
Beijing is a city, an idea, a dream, an experiment-- and soon it will be the site of one of the most elaborate sports events ever, the 2008 summer Olympics. As China began its march toward modernization in the 19th century, Beijing came to symbolize the national aspirations and collective conscience of the Chinese people. In today's seminar, Robert Daly (director of the Institute of Global Chinese Affairs, University of Maryland) discusses the rich history and culture of one of the world's great cities.

Lecture Mother Earth: Call To Consciousness on Climate Change
2-Day Program: Films
Dr. Daniel Wildcat (Yuchi member of the Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma; Professor of American Indian Studies, Haskell Indian Nations University) moderates discussions with the filmmakers after each of the following screenings:

1:30 PM: Waterbuster (2006, 78 min.; produced by J. Carlos Peinado (Mandan/Hidatsa) and Daphne Ross with associate Hillary Abe (Hidatsa/Mandan)) J. Carlos Peinado investigates the impact of the massive Garrison Dam project in his ancestral homeland in the upper Missouri River Basin in North Dakota. Constructed in the 1950s, the dam laid waste to a self-sufficient American Indian community, submerged 156,000 acres of fertile land, and ultimately displaced the people of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.

3:30 PM: March Point (2008, 57 min.; directed by Annie Silverstein, produced by Tracy Rector (Seminole), with youth filmmakers Cody Cayou (Swinomish), Nick Clark (Swinomish), Travis Tom (Swinomish)) Three Swinomish teens participate in a media training program where -- for the first time -- they take a good look at the two oil refineries located on land previously owned by their tribe under the Treaty of Point Elliot.
