Documents, memorabilia, photographs, and a portrait show the involvement of the black educator and clubwoman with Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal administration. Mrs. Bethune played a prominent role in bringing other black professionals into the federal government--a group that came to be known as the "Black Cabinet." Articles on view include a cane--a gift to FDR from Theodore Roosevelt--given to Bethune by Eleanor Roosevelt, the Springarn Medal awarded her by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and a mural depicting NYA programs.
The small lobby exhibit commemorates the centennial of Roosevelt's birth.
