Location: Gallery 3
On view are 38 pieces of ceramics made under the direct sponsorship of feudal lords, a little-known aspect of Japan's ceramic production during the Edo period (1615-1868). The unique "garden kilns," built in large gardens attached to warrior mansions, provided a form of entertainment by firing amateur pieces made by the lords and their guests, while the "official kilns," staffed by outstanding professional potters, produced luxury ceramics.
