Free Within Ourselves: African American Art from the National Museum of American Art

Paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photos, and folk art by 94 African Americans are on view. These works from the museum's permanent collection are by such artists as Frederick Brown, Jacob Lawrence, Lois Mailou Jones, Keith Morrison, Alma Thomas, Sam Gilliam, James VanDerZee, and others. A significant number of new acquisitions are being displayed for the first time, including works by Mel Edwards, Norman Lewis, Hughie Lee-Smith.
