The National Museum of Natural History receives numerous requests for information on endangered species. This pamphlet, listing references on vertebrates and citing additional sources of information, has been compiled as a public service. The prime governmental source for information on this subject is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Division of Endangered Species, 1849 C Street, N.W., Mail Stop 452, ARLSQ., Washington, DC 20240. See site http://endangered.fws.gov/The suggested reference list is divided into eight sections. The publications listed are not available from the Smithsonian Institution but may be obtained from most large public libraries or can be requested through an interlibrary loan. Many are currently in print and can be ordered from local bookstores.

	GENERAL In this section, you will find citations for publications that cover the broad spectrum of rare wildlife and wildlife conservation in various parts of the world.
	REGIONAL This section includes a representative sampling of state and regional publications that provide species accounts and/or status reports.
	FISHES This section focuses on a specific vertebrate group.
	AMPHIBIANS and REPTILES This section focuses on a specific vertebrate group.
	BIRDS This section focuses on a specific vertebrate group.
	MAMMALS This section focuses on a specific vertebrate group.
	PERIODICALS This section contains a list of popular magazines that publish articles on endangered species.
	SOURCES OF INFORMATION This section includes prime governmental sources and a sampling of national and international organizations that publish newsletters, pamphlets, and provide educational materials on the subject of endangered species.
